Managing Constipation

Roughly 30% of consumers complain about constipation. Our bodies are creatures of habit, so a change in a regular daily routine can affect our bowel movements. Many of us can feel sluggish, our clothes might not fit, and it can even impact our personal relationships. Your quality of life is absolutely impacted by ongoing bowel distress. We can sympathize, and we have all experienced many of these symptoms. It is especially frustrating to have a doctor tell you that, “3 bowel movements per week is the norm.” It is challenging and stressful not having answers. The good news is, we can help.

We have been helping people with constipation for years and have seen thousands of cases of chronic constipation resolved. We know that nearly everyone has bouts of constipation now and then, but people’s symptoms vary widely. What constitutes normal bowel movements for you could be completely different for someone else.

Some of the common overlooked habits and lifestyle choices that contribute to constipation:

Too little fiber.

Fiber is an important part of the diet where most Americans fall short. 95% of Americans do not consume as much fiber as recommended in their diet. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends the following for daily fiber intake:
- 25 grams daily for adult women 50 years old or younger
- 38 grams daily for adult men 50 years old or younger
- 28 grams daily for pregnant or lactating women
- 21 grams daily for adult women over 50 years of age
- 30 grams daily for adult men over 50 years of age

Drink more water.

When you don't drink enough water your body can't do its job efficiently and your health suffers.
Did you know:
- 70% of body weight is water
- 95% of your brain matter is water
- 90% of your lungs are water
- 82% of the blood circulating in your veins is water

Eat a whole food, nutrient-dense diet.

Add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar.

Move your body, move your bowels.

Exercise is great for overall health and wellness. It can help to boost your daily bowl movements.
