What is the Role of Hormones in the Body?

Everyone has heard of hormones, but not everyone understands their importance and the role they play in the body. In fact, for many people, hormones are reduced to merely being a teenager with acne and growth spurts. While this is true, hormones have a far greater impact on the adult body than people realize. As an essential component of optimal health, hormones help the body function in a balanced and efficient way, by maintaining homeostasis.

There are multiple types of hormones, many of which are common names. Testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, adrenaline, cortisol, and insulin are all well-known hormones. They act as messengers throughout the body, ensuring that things function properly and run smoothly.

Hormones are a part of the body’s endocrine system, which creates a seamless pathway and balances the levels of hormones in the body. This is incredibly important because a simple imbalance in just one hormone can lead to serious health conditions.

What Functions of the Body do Hormones Control?

There are multiple major functions that are controlled by hormones. If even one hormone is not working properly, any of these areas can be affected. Hormones control these body functions:

  • Body temperature regulation
  • Growth and development of the body
  • Production and use of energy
  • Regulating thirst and appetite
  • Balanced metabolism
  • Emotion/mood control
  • Stress control
  • Stimulating or suppressing programmed cell death
  • Balancing salt and sugar blood levels
  • Ensuring a healthy immune system
  • Effective sexual function/reproduction

In order to keep the body functioning well and as intended, hormones need to work cohesively together in the endocrine system. When there is a hormonal imbalance, the body is thrown off from its healthy state and undergoes health challenges.

There are multiple causes of a hormonal imbalance. The most common cause is adrenal dysfunction, stemming from poor eating habits and stress. When the body is regularly experiencing an unhealthy diet and chronic stress, it responds in a way that causes the hormones to malfunction.

How Do You Regulate Hormones?

It is important to focus on hormone regulation in order to keep the body healthy and functioning properly. There are many things that you can do in the effort to balance your hormones. These include:

  • Liver detoxification

One of the liver’s functions is the removal of extra hormones from the body, decreasing the likelihood of a hormone imbalance. An unhealthy liver can keep it from performing as intended. By detoxing your liver, you are preparing it to function well, helping to prevent a hormone imbalance.

  • Eat a whole foods diet

Eating well is an essential part of a healthy hormone diet. When you eat foods that are whole and well-balanced, your body will get the nutrients and vitamins that it needs.

  • Eat cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables can actually provide support to the liver as it metabolizes extra hormones. These vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and more.

  • Eat healthy fats

Healthy fats are key for keeping hormones balanced and functioning as they should. In fact, many fats are needed for the body to effectively create hormones. By creating hormones, boosting metabolism, and ensuring low levels of inflammation, healthy fats help to balance the hormones.

  • Practice stress management

Stress is one of the main issues that affects hormones. When someone is stressed, the body goes into the fight or flight mode, which causes the body to use up the components it needs to create hormones. This causes an imbalance and can create serious health conditions. To combat this stress, you should use regular stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, meditation, and other deep breathing tools. These techniques lower cortisol levels and enable proper distribution of nutrients, which keeps hormones balanced.

  • Take Chaste Tree

Chaste Tree is an herbal supplement that promotes hormone balance and protects the body from many diseases. The Chaste Tree berries that make up the capsules support healthy female hormone balance, which ensures proper progesterone levels, ensures a healthy menstrual cycle, and supports normal reproduction. Containing other active compounds, Chaste Tree capsules are easy to take and are a great way to keep your hormone levels in check.
